SPIRITUAL GROWTH

CONSISTENT DISCIPLINE

Discipline is a proactive measure needed by every child of God. Discipline is a training that leads to maturity and responsibility on the part of those who put their hearts to it. Discipline is an ongoing process, not a quick fix. No matter where you are spiritually you have got to keep at it. The mind and body must be trained to do what is right.

Discipline involves working hard. It also involves several self-denials to things that seem appealing. Discipline, however, does not come naturally. It is not something people are just born with. It is not a spiritual gift and it most times has to do with acting or going against your natural feelings because of a higher goal or expectation in God.

The power of discipline does not come just from admiring the self-disciplined. It does not come from only making resolutions but from the pursuit of the ‘prize’ as shown in the Holy Scripture below:

1 Corinthians 9:24 KJV – Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

1 Corinthians 9:24 KJV – Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

The essence of discipline is a desire to have the rewards the Spirit offers us more than the rewards sin or the world offers us. If you want to be spiritually, physically and socially healthy, you have to work at being disciplined.

In the course discipline, you will have to say no to things that hinder you from your purpose. And of course, that includes all sin; but it does not stop at just sins as it also includes things that may seem right in themselves, but they will not help you grow towards godliness.

Discipline could involve you switching off your phone, controlling the TV set, and keeping your mouth shut! Many times you have to say no to good activities all because you need to manage your time with your goals. The goal of godliness demands that you spend time each day alone with God in His word and prayer. Your schedule daily should be in line with your goal of becoming a godly person.

A self-disciplined life brings us closer to God and puts us in a better position to hear from God. It causes us to make better choices and walk in the path God has ordained for us because we have taken time to listen to Him. Sustained discipline is always fueled by an intense desire for more joy in God. One of the keys to being a disciplined Christian is to always be motivated towards godliness. When you are spiritual flabby you will be caught up with the temporal.

‘No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, It produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.’ Look inwards to the things you need to adjust and be more disciplined about because you must consistently strive and press towards the ‘Prize’.

Shalom!
