Throughout the bible, God treats this special union of marriage seriously. God’s creative work was not complete until he had made the woman. And He could have made her from the dust of the ground as He did the man. He chose, however to make her from the man’s flesh and bone. In so doing, he illustrated to us that, in marriage, a man and a woman symbolically becomes flesh. This is a mystical union of the couple’s hearts and lives. ” For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh” (Mark 10:7-8).
Throughout the Bible, God treats marriage seriously. He expects therefore, that goal in marriage for every couple should be more than friendship. It should be oneness. It is on this note that we can talk of being knitted together in God’s own way.
The marital relationship is to be nurtured in God’s own way for it to work. Love divinely implanted in each heart must show in its full characteristics nature as described in the scriptures- ” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 KJV
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things” ( I Corinthians 13: 4-7).
The divine blue print on marriage clearly establishes that love will endure and bear all things for godliness and happiness to thrive in the home. In practical terms you need not to wait for your spouse to adjust before you do. Remember you are never the same, given that you have different backgrounds, educational experiences, exposures, and even temperaments. Even if you have all this in common you are still separate individuals with different taste and preferences but you must adjust to take care of each other’s weak areas.
There is no room for blame-shifting or buck-passing where real love exists. Each partner willingly sacrifices ego and self-image in order to develop their character and strengthen their union. You must develop all your Christian virtues in order to enjoy your relationship. Your loving submission to your husband as the head.
To further strengthen your marriage you must learn to “leave and cleave” to each other as it was ordained from the beginning. The marital union is one that nothing on earth- friendship, work, money, social status, parents, or whatever it is – is strong enough to come in between. This is God’s standard and it must be adhered to for marriage to be worth its name.
You must always agree on matters after wise and scriptural deliberations. Carefully and deliberately practise habits that will keep you knitted together- discuss, worship, pray, plan and eat together. Emphasise and appreciate each other’s strengths; play and pray down your weaknesses. Don’t bottle up offences though; talk about them tactfully and nip them in the bud! Learn also to be polite to one another, to be open to one another and to cheerfully share with one another.
As you work by the same rule of love and oneness in the family, you will stay together in harmony and your union will be a model for others to celebrate and imitate!
