A formidable power dwells over your tongue. It can start or end wars; it can build or destroy; it can commend or corrupt; it can bless or blame. You must recognise how powerful your tongue is and how vital your words are in determining whether or not you live in victory or defeat.
Your words can greatly affect your body actions and can determine the course of your life. God’s desire for us is that we use this power to bring glory to His name and to advance His kingdom on earth. We must discover how to gain control of our tongues and use them as a powerful force to release God’s power and fulfil His will in our lives.
Have you ever wondered why it is so important that we take control of our tongues? See what even the Scriptures say:
James 1:26 (KJV) “If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain”.
There are Christians whose mouths are filled with praises and rejoicing only when they are in church services. But when you follow them to the store, office, their homes or any other place, you would be shocked to hear the words of gossip, backbiting, complaints and criticism that flow from their mouths.
We must watch out for those inconsistencies in our lives. There are churches where members use their tongues to stir up strife, fightings, complaints and gossip about a fellow brethren or even a church leader just to destroy their reputation. But have you ever noticed how easy it is for the mouth to “switchgear” when such people are around?
Take a close look at the words you speak in your homes, on your job, while at your business, in church and anywhere you may find yourself to see if they line up with God’s word. You should fill your mouth with faith-filled words; speak it forth and set the course of your life in obedience to the word of God. Reevaluate the words that are coming from your mouth and let your speech be gracious, pleasant, kind, honest, seasoned with salt and edifying.
In your relationship with your siblings, friends, husband or wife, in-laws you have the ability to build them up or tear them down. The tongue has the ability to create a good or bad atmosphere which depends on the kind of words you choose to use.
When life throws pressure at you what do you say out? We have to learn to use our tongues as powerful weapons for positive changes. There is power in the words you speak. Therefore, release the creative power of God’s word in your circumstance. So instead of concentrating on lack of finances and saying “We don’t have enough money to pay bills this month”, speak out in faith. Yes! Even when the economy is bad, speak out in faith. Apply God’s word to all areas of your life.
Rely on God’s strength to help you. for with human efforts alone, no one can tame their tongue. Dedicate your tongue to the Lord each day. You will face new and different circumstances every day, so regularly pray for God’s grace that the words of your mouth would be acceptable. Put your heart in tune with God’s spirit daily by reading His word. Meditate on the word and assume responsibility for every word you speak.
Shalom!
