Choices that we are faced with are innumerable. Yet we have never spared the consequences of our choices. No matter the sincerity or naivety of our  motive when such choices are made. This is an inevitable reality of life- particularly in the area of marriage.

The choice of a marriage partner is one choice that is so paramount to our everyday life and ultimate happiness or otherwise. God’s interest in marriage is such that he has his choice of life partner for different individual. He is an accurate match maker. This is the more reason why every search for a marriage partner must have its origin in God and his direction. We need divine help and direction in this matter because we are embarking on a journey from the known to the unknown. A journey with far- reaching consequences!.

    Marriage in line with God’s choice is always a glorious venture with immeasurable lifetime and eternal dividends. Ecce 4:9-10″ [9] Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. [10] For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.”

    Choice of a God- given marriage partner must begin with prayers before the act is to take place. No amount of prayer can be too much in trying to make marital choices for a number of reasons.

 First and foremost, marriage is for life. Once you make a choice and it is solemnized, it becomes a binding contract for life. The implication of this is that your choice must be carefully and scripturally made. Again, the deep issues in the area of compatibility are known to God alone and they can only be revealed to us through fervent and persistent prayer.

 In a friendship and courtship, a lot of things might be hidden especially character wise; only God can truly reveal the hidden things. As our desire to marry is taken to God in prayer, God communicates with our hearts in a way to lead us to his choice of partner. God reveals through

– a strong impression in the heart inspired by the spirit of God. Rom 8:14

– Audible voice of God 1Sam 3:1-4

– Deep love- not lust, pity for an individual 1Sam 18:1

– Dreams, visions & revelations which must not run contrary to God’s word.

– Peace in the heart concerning perceived choice.

   As a child of God, you should be aware of the channel God often uses to communicate with you. However you should know whatever medium God uses will not contradict his written word.

     Any revelation one receives that contradicts the scriptures must be rejected. Avoid certain common pitfalls which can jeopardize your choice; You must not walk by sight. Using beauty, material possession, tribe, race,secular position or wealth of a family to make a choice of a life partner may be dangerous. Being rich in earthly things might not guarantee the possession of a good heart which makes a good home. You must avoids “goading” God. Don’t give specifications to God about what manner of person he must provide. Learn to leave everything in his hands. Nobody can be wiser than God in these matters.

Finally, whatever insights or revelations anyone has concerning your marriage partner, be sure to the leading of the spirit of God yourself. Know that as a believer you must marry a believer and not an unbeliever. That a person attends church regularly does not make him or her a believer.

   Surgeon said ” if you want to wither your happiness forever, you have to only go and be yoked with an unbeliever. You had better remain in the cold of your bachelor or spinster life than warm your hands at the fire of an unhallowed marriage.”

Enter into marriage with courage but with caution. Take time to do that which time cannot do. Think well before you tie what you cannot untie. May God help you to be wise.
